The Midwest
Typical Nina. I go one glorious month, posting on a regular basis and then bam - nothing. Well, I figured I would post a little something since I have been traveling around for the last few weeks and work seems much too much to concentrate on at the moment.
It was a whirlwind of a trip, I went from Minneapolis to BFE, Wisconsin to Chicago to Beaver Creek, Colorado finally home. Whew. IT was great. The midwest can be summed up in one delicious delicacy I indulged in on a pit stop in Clear Lake, Wisconsin - cobbler. Dan ( peace corps buddy and native Minnesotan) and I drove together from Minneapolis to Leslie's (another Peace Corps compadre and also the reason I went to Wisconsin - I was the maid of honor at her wedding) parent's house in a tiny town- actually town wouldn't be the appropriate word, let's call it a "blip." On the way to Leslie's blip Dan and I stopped at the slightly larger blip (they had two restaurants and main street) Clear Lake and grabbed a bite at Lucky's. This was the type of joint where locals run up a tab, and the chef is the waitress, is the hostess, is the cashier. I ordered a cobb salad, without the egg, the ham and with the dressing on the side. You would have thought that I murdered the mayor by the look on the waitresses face. Dan laughed. "LA has gotten to your head." The salad was a delightful plate of iceburg, cheese and tomatoes. Mediocre. BUT, the "piece de resistance" was dessert. Apple cobbler, ONE DOLLAR. I tell you folks one bite and I quote, I couldn't help myself from exclaiming, "This is the midwest in a bowl." It was warm, appley, cinammony, rolled oat goodness." Just the temperment of the midwest. Comfort food, comfort people. Nothing fancy but flavorable and delicious all the same. I also encountered a myriad of different salads involving mayonnaise on my trip. But I was forewarned by my midwest Peace Corps pals that mayonaise is a great lake region staple. Midwest is to mayo as california is to the avocado. How's that for an SAT analogy.
The wedding was amazing. But, that I will save for the next posting.
