President Bush is coming to Romania ( lucky us) and he or his administration invited all the peace corps volunteers to go and see his speech in Bucharest. Needless to say I am going. This is probably my only chance to ever see the man that close up. I am thinking about holding up a sign that says something to the effect of: "Don't you think having a military base and the peace corps in the same country is a little bit of a CONFLICT OF INTEREST" Everything that we do here as volunteers is negated by the very presence of US forces. He is only going to be in Romania for less than four hours. It's his daughter's birthday and he has to get home for her party. The Romanians are rerouting all Bucharest traffic for him. The city is going to be in an uproar and I doubt that he even knows what mamaliga is ( it's the romanian national dish..kinda like polenta). Already today my kids got pulled out of all of their morning classes to celebrate Romania getting into NATO. Did they really have to miss class though? This is a big deal for this small country. I wonder how exactly NATO will hurt and help? I sure hope that promises are fufilled because i don't think many people can handle many more dissapointments. i hate politics.
